Cultural heritage week begins at Chicot State Park - Alexandria Daily Town Talk Posted: 17 Apr 2010 12:17 AM PDT VILLE PLATTE - For the 11th year, lovers of local music and culture will converge upon southwest Louisiana for the Dewey Balfa Cajun and Creole Heritage Week, which begins Friday and runs through April 23 in Chicot State Park near Ville Platte. People from six countries and 25 states will attend a week of workshops on everything from Cajun and zydeco dance to food to music presented by a staff of 30 teaching artists. While many of the visitors will stay all week, area residents may pick and choose from events. "People can just come for one class or one day," said Todd Mouton, executive director of Louisiana Folk Roots, the presenting organization. "In addition, we have two big festival days, Saturday and Sunday, and as the third component, we have a nightly dance for five nights." The dances will be held under a 60- by 120-foot tent that covers a 32- by 48-foot hardwood dance floor, Mouton said. Among the highlights of the week-long event will be boucherie on Saturday, a heritage stage for workshops on a variety of topics, including instruction on Cajun and Creole accordion, guitar and vocals, dance lessons and cooking classes. The cost of classes runs the gamut from $10 per class to $100 for the whole day, Mouton said. "You can pick and choose," he said. "You can literally show up and say, 'I want to do this session.' " Among the popular workshops are the dance classes that teach Cajun two-step and waltz, led by Millie Ortego, and zydeco dance lessons, led by Mona Wilson. In addition to the workshops, about 20 cooking teams from the community will offer some of the food that Acadiana is famous for. Mouton believes the event offers something special. "I think our festival is one of the better-kept secrets," he said. "There are Cajun and Creole music camps around the United States, but none have nightly dances or a two-day festival." Notable Mergers and Acquisitions of the Day 04/15: APA ... - StreetInsider.com (subscription) Posted: 15 Apr 2010 07:36 AM PDT The details of the deal will pay Mariner Energy $26.22 per share in cash and stock, which is a 45 percent over the Wednesday closing price. Shareholders of Mariner would receive 0.17 of an Apache share and $7.80 in cash for each share owned. Apache would also assume $1.2 billion in debt from Mariner in the deal that could be completed in the third quarter. "This is a strategic step and a natural extension into the deepwater Gulf for Apache," said G. Steven Farris, Apache's chairman and chief executive officer. "Mariner provides an exciting new platform for growth in the deepwater and complements our strengths in the Gulf Shelf and the Permian Basin. Based on our experience working with the Mariner team, we also believe the two companies will make an excellent cultural fit." Apache has been looking to acquire assets to expand its exploration efforts in the Gulf of Mexico, and said Monday that it planned to buy Devon Energy Corp. (NYSE: DVN) for $1.05 billion. The deal for Devon will add to Apache's core areas on the shelf of the Gulf of Mexico, while the addition of Mariner will bring the company a stronger position in the area's deeper waters. The deal is the latest in a flurry of activity in the energy sector, which has seen companies place bets on higher prices for oil and natural gas while the economic recovery takes hold.
