Midtown Greenway construction starting in Detroit - MLive.com Posted: 09 Apr 2010 11:25 AM PDT (AP) — DETROIT - Construction starts next week on the Midtown Greenway, which by the fall will be an improved route for pedestrians and bicyclists around Detroit's Cultural Center area and Wayne State University's campus. It's the first part of a four-phase project that by 2012 is expected to link the area with Eastern Market and the Detroit riverfront. It will widen walkways, as well as add landscaping, bike racks, benches and small park areas. "We wanted to create a more walkable district ... and to beautify the neighborhood and to really help spur on more economic development," Susan Mosey, president of the University Cultural Center Association, which is spearheading the project, said Friday.
Construction on the first phase, which includes about half of a two-mile loop in the area, is expected to cost about $2 million. In all, project construction could total about $12 million. Crews begin work Monday near the Detroit Public Library's main branch, and an event to mark the project's start is Thursday. The greenway is designed make the area-which includes the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center and the Detroit Medical Center's main campus-more welcoming to pedestrians and bicyclists. The loop will be completed in two more phases, October to June 2011 and June-November 2011. The final phase, to be built April-October 2012, will run about 1.5 miles through the Brush Park neighborhood. When completed, it will reach Eastern Market, Detroit's main farmers market. It also will connect to the Dequindre Cut Greenway, a former rail line converted into a pedestrian and biking trail that leads to the Detroit RiverWalk. Funding comes from a number of sources, including the Kresge Foundation, the Michigan Department of Transportation, federal stimulus money and the Community Foundation for Southeast Michigan's GreenWays Initiative. It's the latest effort to make parts of the car-dependent Motor City more pedestrian- and bike-friendly. "It isn't about expanding the sidewalks," said GreenWays Initiative Director Tom Woiwode. "You need to create a way for communities to work together. ... You need to find a way to create more vibrant neighborhoods." ___ On the Net: University Cultural Center Association: http://www.detroitmidtown.com Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry.
