Commissioner Concerns Over Multi-Cultural Center - KELOLAND TV

Posted: 23 Apr 2010 03:19 PM PDT

SIOUX FALLS, SD - In light of recent concerns over the management and budget of the Multi-Cultural Center, the Minnehaha County Commission is taking a closer look it's contract with the state involving the center.

The state gave the county $1.8 million to help renovate the Sioux Falls Coliseum. In turn, County Commissioners agreed to give the Multi-Cultural Center a home there for the next 20 years, but with the future of the Center in jeopardy, county tax payers could wind up footing the bill.

Over the past two month, four board members of the Multi-Cultural Center have stepped down, leaving the organization without a governing board and plenty of questions about it's current management from both city and county officials.

"If we find that the operation is as dysfunctional as it appears to be then I feel a responsibility as a county commissioner to take action," County Commissioner Jeff Barth said.

The same contract which gives the Multi-Cultural Center a home for 20 years, also leaves county commissioners with no ability to ensure that the organization is run properly.

"I'm not going to sit by and let this gift to the county be squandered by...some poorly-thought out organization," Barth said.

Which is why the commission is now looking to Governor Rounds to re-negotiate the contract to allow commissioners to help get the center back on track.

"If they aren't doing their job and they're not doing it right, we don't want them there," Barth said.

Should the organization dissolve, it would break the county's agreement with the state which means county taxpayers could be facing a nearly $2 million repayment bill.

More county oversight could save both the center and taxpayers, but Barth insists neither option will make him happy.

"I really don't want to have this involvement with the Multi-Cultural Center but as a county commissioner I can't stand by when things are spinning out of control into something we don't want in our community," Barth said.

We contacted the Governor's office for comment, his Press Secretary says the Governor has received the letter from the Commission and is reviewing the contract, but hasn't made any decision yet.
