Michaëlle Jean will be appointed UN envoy: report - Financial Post

Posted: 21 Jun 2010 07:52 PM PDT

Governor General Michaëlle Jean will be appointed special envoy for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), according to a CTV report filed late Monday night. The TV network's Ottawa bureau chief Robert Fife said Ms. Jean's main goal will be to fight poverty and Haiti's appallingly low literacy rate.

"She'll not only spend time in Haiti, but also travel the globe to keep the world's eyes focused on Haiti and to raise funds," he added. Mr. Fife said Prime Minister Stephen Harper went to bat to get her the high-profile job, which starts in late September. Ms. Jean has been Governor-General of Canada since 2005.

Before that, she was a journalist with Radio-Canada. Based in Paris and counting over 50 offices around the world, UNESCO is a key UN agency with a mandate to build peace, end poverty, promote sustainable development and intercultural dialogue. Canada is one of 182 states that are members of the organization.

itineraries and their Western Himalayas expedition is no exception.

Gary Wintz has an impressive list of career highlights and, among his many accomplishments, Gary has worked on several humanitarian projects throughout Asia and parts of Africa; lectured at Tibet University in Lhasa where he was one the first Westerners to reside in Tibet since the communist Chinese occupation; and had an ongoing friendship with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

"Having spent much of the past 30 years in this area of the world, I am thrilled to return and share my knowledge of Himalayan culture and history with the inquisitive and adventurous travelers that Zegrahm & Eco Expeditions attracts," Gary says about this Western Himalayas expedition.

Gary will lead adventurers from the splendors of Delhi to the Kashmiri moonscapes of Ladakh and the princely states of the Western Himalayas. From ancient mountaintop monasteries and temples to colorful, bustling bazaars, travelers experience the richness of the Buddhist, Hindu, and Sikh religions, plus a vast variety of birds and wildlife in cedar forests and verdant valleys. Western Himalayas expedition highlights include:

• The Dussehera Festival in Shimla, which celebrates the victorious homecoming of Rama, the epic hero of the Ramayana. Enjoy a lively folk play, colorful processions, Natti dances and songs, and a trader's bazaar.
• Near Palampur, visit the Dolma Ling Nunnery and Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, home to 200 nuns who invite travelers to participate in a traditional, lamp-lighting ceremony.

• In Chandigarh, instead of watching traditional dance as most tourists do, travelers on this expedition will become students of the traditional folk dances. Men and women are split up and the men are taught the Bangra while the ladies learn the Gidda.

This Western Himalayas expedition departs October 3, 2010 and October 4, 2011, Dussehera festival takes place during the 2010 expedition only. Per person, double occupancy rate is $9,980 for this 18 day itinerary. To learn more about this Western Himalayas expedition, Gary Wintz, and Zegrahm & Eco Expeditions, visit http://www.zeco.com.

Kristen Stewart's Cultural Berlin Outing - The Gossip Girls

Posted: 18 Jun 2010 04:57 PM PDT

Enjoying a little free time from her European promotional trek, Kristen Stewart was spotted out in Berlin, Germany on Saturday (June 19).

Sporting a white hoodie with jeans, the Bella Swan babe was joined by security personnel as she visited the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe.

In related news, Miss Stewart recently voiced her interest in taking over Angelina Jolie's role in the upcoming "Wanted 2" movie.

She tells MTV News of the possibility, "Yes. Definitely, as long as it was really good. Wanted was a great movie … James McAvoy makes that movie different than most other action movies because he's a real guy, and I feel most action movies don't have that. But I wouldn't just want to be in a mindless, blow-up movie. I'm not into it."
