Organizers prepare for cultural festival - Longview News-Journal Posted: 18 Jun 2010 08:53 PM PDT Multicultural Festival Chairman Branden Johnson said this week he inspected the site of this fall's event in Longview. The festival is sponsored by Partners in Prevention. Festival organizers are still accepting entry forms for vendors at the Sept. 25 event, planned for the Longview Exhibit Building. Johnson said music fans can enjoy a free concert that day from local artists presenting a range of performance with a distinct multicultural flavor. Door prizes will also be available. "And food lovers will be spoiled for choice when it comes to cuisine, with a variety of foods on offer including Mexican, cajun, Cantonese, Italian and a selection of Americana festival foods," Johnson said. "I can't wait to join thousands of other East Texans in sampling the world without leaving the area." For more information or to enter, visit pip.longviewtexas.gov/multicultural-festival or the Partners in Prevention front desk, at 140 E. Tyler Street Suite 400. Scottsdale Cultural Council explores cultural upgrades - AZCentral.com Posted: 18 Jun 2010 06:37 PM PDT The Scottsdale Cultural Council is exploring possible long-term facility needs that include a world-class performance enclosure and an icon museum that honors people whose creativity has touched the city. The council commissioned a $65,000 facility needs assessment from Webb Management Services Inc. this year. The assessment was a first step in updating a culture master plan, which is required according to the council's contract with Scottsdale. Among the possible options that Webb Management identified were upgrading existing facilities at the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts and the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art; creating an icon museum; facilities for a lifelong learning program; and a performance enclosure. The icon museum would be a way to showcase individuals and their body of work with ties to Scottsdale. Names mentioned as part of the museum include architects Frank Lloyd Wright and Paolo Soleri along with light and space artist James Turrell. The Scottsdale Cultural Council Board of Trustees will review Webb's report on Tuesday. "The board is going to prioritize the list and decide what two things we should look at first," said Jim Green, chief financial officer for the Scottsdale Cultural Council. "They will pick out two to fund for a feasibility study." Each feasibility study will cost from $30,000 to $35,000. The study is being funded by the Scottsdale Industrial Development Authority and a private foundation. "(The study looked at) what are the needs and which ones are not being adequately served, what are the opportunities and what are the facilities we need to meet those needs," said Bill Banchs, Cultural Council president. "Just because it's in the report, doesn't mean we're going to do it." The performance enclosure is estimated in the range of $40 million. The space would be similar to Tanglewood Music Center in Lenox, Mass. Events there include local recitals and an outdoor concert series. It is the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Some of the suggestions are more activity-related and not considered high-cost, such as the art therapy program.
