CORRECTION FROM SOURCE: Rocco Rossi Campaign Adds Major Cultural and Business ... - Newsblaze.com

TORONTO, ONTARIO - (Marketwire - Sept. 16, 2010) - The following corrects and replaces the release sent at 16:26 pm ET on Sept. 16, 2010. In the original version, the surname Clarke was incorrectly spelled. The complete and corrected release follows.

As surging mayoral candidate Rocco Rossi continued to present a package of bold policy ideas for Toronto on transportation, governance and innovation, more prominent voices from across the political and community spectrum have declared their support for his candidacy.

The escalating enthusiasm for a Rossi mayoralty was reflected in the Toronto Board of Trade's Vote Toronto website. On it, the Board of Trade declared "everything's coming up Rossi," when commenting on the extraordinary amount of news coverage that Rossi's fresh concepts have generated. Rossi's focus on policy ideas, accountability at City Hall and innovation in solving the issues Toronto faces continues to attract support from all quarters.

This week, the team welcomed support from community, business and cultural leaders, including a triumvirate of Canadian literary legends. Rossi, a candidate from outside of politics who seeks to bring real-world vigour to City Hall, is a favorite among those who want change.

Joining the Rossi mayoral bid are distinguished writers Peter C. Newman, C.C., Austin Clarke and Allan Fotheringham. Newman has been an astute chronicler of the Canadian political scene through books, newspapers and magazines since the 1960s. A former editor-in-chief of the Toronto Star and a former editor of Maclean's magazine, he is the author of more than 20 popular histories and biographies. Clarke is a highly regarded novelist, short-story writer and journalist, and notable for his depiction of the black experience in North America. He has won numerous top literary awards for his work including the Commonwealth Writers Award for The Polished Hoe. Fotheringham is perhaps best known as the "back page" in Maclean's magazine, where readers could find superb political writing. His 48-year career in journalism included a remarkable 34 years as a newspaper and magazine columnist for which he received top journalism awards and distinctions, earned him a reputation as a critic of complacency and "cob-web blower" in Canadian politics.

"I'm voting for Rocco Rossi because I'm impressed," said Fotheringham. "I think people with brains are what we need running the biggest city in the country. The thought of any other of the candidates running Canada's biggest and richest city appalls me. I cannot believe it and that why I'm voting for him."

Other prominent Toronto figures proud to be joining Rocco Rossi in his quest to lead the city are:

-- Canadian business leader Anthony S. Fell, OC, who is the former deputy chairman of Royal Bank of Canada. One of Bay Street's pre-eminent figures, Fell was with RBC Capital Markets and predecessor companies for 48 years, including 18 years as CEO and a further 8 years as chairman until his retirement in 2007. A past governor of the Toronto Stock Exchange, Fell is also past chairman of the University Health Network, a Local Integrated Health Network. Fell sits on the board of directors of multiple corporations, including Bell Canada Enterprises, CAE, and Loblaw Companies Ltd. -- Charles Coffey, O.C., the former executive vice president, government affairs and business development, for RBC Financial Group. During his 44-year career with RBC, Coffey also led three regional headquarters: Manitoba, Metro Toronto, and Ontario. Coffey is a tireless advocate for children, human rights and First Nations. He has been active as co-chair of the Aboriginal Human Resource Development Council of Canada; chair of the Council for Early Child Development; chair, national advisory council, Canadian Museum for Human Rights; executive committee member, National Aboriginal Economic Development Board; past co-chair, Commission on Early Learning and Child Care for the City of Toronto; governor, The Canadian Council of Christians and Jews and a director of the Arctic Children and Youth Foundation. -- Noted arts philanthropist Richard Rooney, who is president and chief investment officer of Burgundy Asset Management. Rooney is president and a trustee of the Art Gallery of Ontario Foundation, a director of Empire Life Insurance, a director of the Historica-Dominion Institute and past chair of the Stratford Festival of Canada. -- Mary Aitken, prominent Toronto businesswoman and the founder and owner of the highly successful Verity women's club. Aitken was a YWCA 2008 Woman of Distinction for Entrepreneurship. -- Brian L. French, managing partner of Realciprocity Advisors Inc. and a globally known and respected corporate real estate strategist and advisor. In 2008, he co-founded a web-based commercial real estate community (CREOPoint) and has also been managing director Canada for NAI Global, a major corporate real estate services provider. -- Peter Vecchiarelli has joined the campaign team as a co-director of outreach. A highly regarded constituency advisor, he has worked at both the provincial and federal levels and was an executive assistant for former Liberal M.P., Toronto riding of York West, Sergio Marchi.

Cultural Fair returns to Cupertino's Fall Fest - San Jose Mercury News

Posted: 16 Sep 2010 08:04 PM PDT

Cupertino residents won't have to travel as far as Walt Disney World's EPCOT center to immerse themselves in a smorgasbord of cultural exhibits.

On Sept. 25 and 26, residents will have the opportunity to take a quick and easy journey through other nations at Cupertino Memorial Park during the city's annual Cupertino-Silicon Valley Fall Festival.

Organizers are reviving the festival's cultural fair that some residents may remember from the Lunar New Year Unity Parade Day, an event which ceased about three years ago.

Approximately 30 booths representing the traditions, customs and dress from various countries are set to be on display at this year's festival, according to Cupertino City Councilman Orrin Mahoney, who is helping to organize the event with the Rotary Club of Cupertino.

India, China, Tibet, Palestine, Japan and Vietnam are among the nations that residents will have a chance to visit. Each booth will feature information about a different nation, and some will display artifacts and descriptions of their native origin. Some booths will have hands-on activities for children, who are also invited to get a personal passport that will be stamped at each booth.

Mahoney said that when the nonprofit Lunar New Year Unity Parade Day disbanded, organizers donated money left over to Rotary with explicit instructions to use it for similar aims and maintain the message of the parade.

The cultural fair is just one part of

the city's fall fest, which kicks off with the first Bridge to Health Run, a 5k walk and run across the Mary Avenue Bicycle Footbridge from Cupertino into Sunnyvale at 8: 30 a.m. The race is sponsored by the YMCA and Whole Foods.

The fall fest will also include displays on emergency preparedness and healthy eating, as well as a Keep it Green Environmental Fair, where the city will display solar products, CFL and LED lighting, alternative fuel and electric vehicles.

Other highlights include a fine arts show at the Quinlan Center, displaying work by local artists. The Euphrat Museum at De Anza College will also be open.

The fall fest is a joint program between the Rotary Club of Cupertino and the World Journal, a Chinese language newspaper. This is the first time the World Journal has partnered with the program. Other sponsors include Apple Inc., Recology, PG&E, Hewlett-Packard and Lehigh Cement. The festival also receives support from the city of Cupertino and the Cupertino Union School District.

Money raised from the fall festival is used for community service projects.

The Cupertino-Silicon Valley Fall Festival will take place on Sept. 25 and 26 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Cupertino Memorial Park on Stevens Creek Boulevard,, across from De Anza College.
