Not for nothing is the month of January named after the two-headed Roman god Janus. It's a time for looking both forward and back, and in 2011, the arts in the Bay Area and beyond will provide occasion for both.

Retrospection is the order of the day for a new collection of posthumous work by sculptor Eva Hess and a return of the boy bands New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys. The Merce Cunningham Dance Company makes its final visit before disbanding, and the Harry Potter cinematic juggernaut closes up shop with "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2."

Looking ahead, there's new music by San Francisco composer Nathaniel Stookey for the great mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade and a visit from Vermont's up-and-coming Grace Potter and the Nocturnals. San Francisco Ballet offers new works by choreographers Wayne McGregor and Kenneth MacMillan, while Berkeley Rep's Tony Taccone debuts as a playwright with a solo show about (and starring) Rita Moreno.

As for mediating between the two, the Marsh will host successive solo shows by two generations of Hoyles, Dan and Geoff, and Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the San Francisco Symphony and Chorus in a double bill of music by Mozart and Morton Feldman.

Read on for more details from Chronicle critics and contributors about the cultural treasures in store in the new year.
