| Iran plans reduce cultural relations with Britain - CharlotteObserver.com Posted: 16 Mar 2010 11:25 AM PDT TEHRAN, Iran Iran says the country plans to reduce its cultural relations with Britain, an indication of the deteriorating relations between the two countries. Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said Tuesday that there will be changes in the realm of "education and universities." Iran has not sent students on Iranian scholarships to Britain in past years. On Monday British Foreign Secretary David Miliband called Iran's nuclear program a "real threat" to international security. Britian, along with other Western powers, fear that the program is aimed at creating weapons, a charge Iran denies. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | COTILLARD SUFFERS PIN STAB DURING FRENCH CULTURAL ... - Daily Star Posted: 16 Mar 2010 07:21 AM PDT Oscar winner MARION COTILLARD winched in pain as she was honoured by the French government on Monday (15Mar10) after the country's Culture Minister FREDERIC MITTERRAND accidentally stabbed her as he pinned a medallion to her blouse.
The French actress, who took home gold for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in La Vie En Rose, was made an officer in the Order of Arts and Letters in a ceremony in Paris on Monday (15Mar10), alongside director Tim Burton. But Cotillard was left nursing a minor injury as Mitterrand attempted to attach the green and gold accolade to her chest - only to stick the pin into the star's flesh. However, the actress managed to laugh off the mishap as Mitterrand offered his arm for support and apologised profusely for his mistake. Five Filters featured article: Chilcot Inquiry. | Tim Burton and Marion Cotillard Land Top Cultural Honor ... - AceShowbiz Posted: 15 Mar 2010 09:41 PM PDT The director of 'Alice in Wonderland' and actress Marion Cotillard have been honored at the Culture Ministry in the French capital, making them officers of the National Order of Arts and Letters. "Alice in Wonderland" director Tim Burton and actress Marion Cotillard have been awarded one of France's top cultural honors at a ceremony in Paris. The American moviemaker, whose adaptation of the Lewis Carroll's classic has smashed winter box office records around the world, joined Oscar winner Cotillard at the Culture Ministry in the French capital on Monday, March 15, when they were both made officers of the National Order of Arts and Letters. After accepting the accolade from Culture Minister Frederic Mitterand, Burton paid special tribute to the country, saying "I feel much more at home here than I do in my own country and I thank you very much." "Alice in Wonderland", starring Johnny Depp, grossed $210.3 million worldwide in its first three days of release, from March 5 - 7, scoring the most successful 3-D opening ever and the biggest opening in the first quarter of the year. The film opened in America with an estimated $116.3 million, easily beating the winter record set by "The Passion of The Christ" in 2004, and added a further $62 million to its domestic earnings over the weekend.

| Middlesex County's Lively Cultural Scene Overlooked - Hartford Courant Posted: 16 Mar 2010 06:56 PM PDT YOUR LETTERS I praise James W. Schmotter's perspective and insight regarding economic development in Connecticut based on "arts and other creative enterprises" [Opinion, March 14, "Nurturing A 'Creative Corridor'"]. However, he is remiss in leaving out key examples of the riches of Middlesex County including, among others, the Goodspeed Opera and the Norma Terris Theater; as well as Middletown in particular, which has both the creative clusters he refers to (writers, fine artists, filmmakers) and a world-class institution of higher education, Wesleyan University. These partnerships have produced well-known economic results for the region and will continue to contribute significantly to local and state economic development (restaurants, independent coffeehouses, arts-related employment). There is an unfortunate slant embedded in the article that seems to fly in the face of necessary and desirable networking among so-called kindred spirits. If Connecticut is to be seen as well positioned for economic development based on creative enterprises, then we need to include all of the state's diverse and enriched counties — not just the ones that reflect our own regional perspectives.
