Puppet procession celebrates cultural diversity - Times Colonist

A program called Puppets and Traditions was held Sunday afternoon in Victoria to celebrate International Day for the Elimination of Racism at St. John the Divine Church, 1611 Quadra St. The free presentation, directed by Lina de Guevara of Puente Theatre with master puppeteer Tim Gosley, featured a giant puppet procession with international storytellers.

The puppets were created by participants from China, Cuba, Germany, Mexico, South Korea, Thailand, Chile, Kenya and South Africa in this collaboration of Puente Theatre and the Inter-Cultural Association of Greater Victoria.

Storytellers Jean Pierre Makosso, Barbara Pogemiller and Izad Etemadi told culturally diverse tales relating to puppets and the experience of immigration.

"Even though we come from all around the globe we feel as a family of creators and we want to share these feelings with the audience," said Lina de Guevara, the director of the event.

The audience was invited to participate with butterfly puppets and multicultural masks.

Several Locals Attend Jewish Food and Cultural Festival - WCTV

Posted: 21 Mar 2010 06:07 PM PDT

The first Jewish Food and Cultural Festival was held Sunday at the Temple Israel.

People in attendance got the chance to try authentic Jewish food, listen to Israeli music, and view hand-made art.

There was even face painting and crafts for the children.

Organizers say they wanted people to have fun and walk away with a little knowledge about Jewish culture.

"It's important to have a Jewish presence here and let our non-Jewish neighbors know and we're all friends here in Tallahassee," said organizer April Katine.

Money raised at the festival will go toward religious programs at Temple Israel.
