SIOUX FALLS, SD - The former executive director of the Multi-Cultural Center spoke today for the first time since he was asked to step down from his position. Qadir Aware helped develop the center for the past eleven years, but that work has come under attack after two separate studies raised concerns about his leadership. Addressing a room full of community members, Aware touched on accusations ranging from bus safety, budget issues and that he has alienated some ethnic communities. Today, he spoke to the group defending his work and his plans to stay committed to the community despite resigning. "This is not about my job, this is not about my paycheck, this is about the truth, the truth. It's a group of people trying to destroy the Multi-Cultural Center and using me as target," Aware said. In his first time publicly speaking about dozens of accusations against him, Aware defended the decisions he made as leader of the Multi-Cultural Center in Sioux Falls. "The Multi-Cultural Center is not run by the right piece, to write a good piece of paper about it, or a bachelor degree or masters degree. It's run by the passion and understanding, the struggle of a refugee immigrant in this community," Aware said. Reports claim Aware mis-used Multi-Cultural Center funds, alienated certain groups and personally made money selling cars to immigrants despite potential conflicts of interest. "None of those car I sold to refugee I ever made one dime of profit out of it," Aware said. Former Multi-Cultural Board President Jerry Walton spoke on Aware's behalf. He says 90 percent of the board supports Aware and the work he's done with the center. "I have never seen a more passionate man who has worked so hard for all of you and your different cultures," Walton said. Aware says the recent reports are untrue and they've left members of the Multi-Cultural Center hurt and divided. "For 25 years, I served this community to make a difference, what I get out of it from Sioux Falls is this, accusation after accusation against me," Aware said. Aware went through both reports pointing to each claim and why he's says it isn't true. The Board of Directors for the Multi-Cultural Center is working on selecting an interim executive director. | Former Director of Multi-Cultural Center Speaks Out - KSFY.com Posted: 02 May 2010 08:44 PM PDT Qadir Aware said, "I do not, ladies and gentlemen, I do not hesitate, and no power in this city can stop this man to respond to the truth." After a week of silence, and a week after we learned that Qadir Aware the former executive director of the Multi-cultural Center in Sioux Falls was forced to resign. He spoke out today against the media and a certain Minnehaha county commissioner in a press conference in front of supporters. The Multi-cultural Center's Board announced Aware's resignation last Tuesday. The center was under scrutiny after four board members recently resigned and a University of South Dakota report criticized the facility. Board members in 2008 told a consultant that Aware was difficult to work with. Sunday, Aware responded to the criticism against him. Qadir Aware said, "My message to County Commissioner you not going to put this man down because I am believing in what I am doing, I have a passion what I am doing and I am going to fight every single day for right of the refugee immigrant." The city is auditing the publicly supported center and county officials have asked Governor Rounds to help give them more oversight. © 2010 KSFY Action News. All rights reserved.
