| Posted: 15 Jun 2010 10:20 AM PDT The American Swedish Institute on Tuesday unveiled designs for the Nelson Cultural Center addition and announced renovation plans for the Turnblad Mansion. The Minneapolis institute said in a news release that it is more than halfway to its $21.5 million fundraising goal for the projects. Construction of the 34,000-square-foot cultural center addition begins early next year, with completion scheduled for the middle of 2012. Inside the building will be offices, a reception lobby, shop, cafe, art gallery, studio and workshop and event space for up to 325 people. Minneapolis firm HGA Architects and Engineers designed the building to be gold certified for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED), and features a sloping green roof, geothermal heating system and underground water storage for irrigation. "Drawing inspiration from Swedish architecture and landscapes, and working with Swedish designers has been an exciting aspect of this project," said lead HGA architect E. Tim Carl. "Our team carefully selected materials, such as various woods, glass and blue-stone pavers, for their sustainable qualities and low maintenance. We also identified perennials and trees, including birch, which thrive in both Minnesota and Sweden." The institute also plans on renovating its home for 80 years and landscaping the grounds. The Turnblad Mansion will get an elevator tower and 10,000-square-feet of repurposed space in the lower level. The institute, at 2600 Park Avenue, was founded in 1929 and hosts more than 75,000 visitors annually.
