Round Hill Elementary held its annual multi cultural night and a packed crowd looked on as twenty countries were represented from the student body.

The night was happy but also sad in a way because Round Hill may be closing at the end of the school year.

Parents say they will miss it.

Traci Stinnett said, "It's more like a family and I've had children here for twelve years in spaces and it's more like a family."

If Round Hill does close, the students would transfer to Huff Lane Elementary which is just down the road.

Parents, teachers, and students won't know for sure if the school will close until the school board finalizes its budget.

Irish culture on tap for cultural series - Springfield News Sun

Posted: 23 Mar 2010 03:41 PM PDT

By Samantha Sommer, Staff Writer 6:47 PM Tuesday, March 23, 2010

SPRINGFIELD — Judge Richard Carey normally is charged with sorting out truths.

But on Thursday, March 25, he'll be full of blarney and telling tales.

Carey is the speaker at the next installment of the Global Education and Peace Network's speaker series and will present "Stories and Songs from Ireland."

"The music and the stories are readily understandable by people," Carey said. "They are attracted to its lightheartedness and fun. And it goes well with a pint of Guinness."

The free event will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 26, in room 105 of the Shouvlin Center at Wittenberg University.

The Clark County Probate Court judge, Carey is of Irish heritage and a musician. He will be accompanied by Tyler Detrick, a Shawnee High School student, on fiddle.

Carey will share some Irish history, as well as music and tales.

"We're just hoping people leave with a smile on their face and a renewed appreciation for the Irish spirit that makes the land and people so beautiful," he said.

The monthly speaker series is co-sponsored by the Center for Civic and Urban Engagement at Wittenberg. The theme this year is "Sharing Our Stories: Family and Cultural Traditions that Shape Us."

The network grew out of study circles formed after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

Storytelling has been vital to many cultures, Carey said.

"People have always loved stories," he said. "That's been their greatest pastime since man was on this Earth."
