| 250 individuals sworn in as US citizens - MLive.com Posted: 28 May 2010 05:08 PM PDT (AP) DEARBORN, Mich. - Nancy Malang has lived in the U.S. for a dozen years. She's enjoyed much of what this country has to offer, but long has hoped to do one thing many Americans take for granted. Vote. Malang, who emigrated from the Philippines in 1998, took an oath of citizenship along with hundreds of others Friday at a ceremony in suburban Detroit.
"After waiting for so long, I feel so relieved," Malang said. The 49-year-old from Pinckney said she is most excited about exercising her right to vote in this year's Michigan gubernatorial election. Malang and the group of about 250 were sworn in by U.S. District Judge George Caram Steeh at the Bint Jebail Cultural Center in Dearborn, which is known as the capital of Arab America. "God bless America," one man yelled at the end of the program. "I am so happy I was able to live long enough to come to America," Radmila Novitovic said through her daughter, Jelena Dion. Novitovic, 79, was the oldest new citizen sworn in Friday. Novitovic emigrated from Serbia eight years ago when she began to experience health complications. Dion, who already had moved to the U.S., sent for her mother so she could be closer to family. "I love absolutely everything here," Novitovic said through Dion. "I never dreamed I would live in America." The event was hosted by the Michigan chapter of the American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee and the city of Dearborn Heights. Speakers included U.S. Attorney Barbara McQuade, FBI Detroit Special Agent in Charge Andrew Arena and representatives of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Officials said the ceremony gave the community a chance to formally welcome the new citizens. "We are making sure the public is aware of what a true right and responsibility it is to be an American citizen," McQuade said. "So many of us take our citizenship for granted and our duties as citizens." The group sworn in represented 54 countries, and most were from India.
